Leopard Injures Three People During Five-Hour Standoff in Rajasthan Store

The incident began around 8:45 am on Monday. The leopard, which authorities believe wandered from nearby hills into the town’s residential and commercial area, first encountered Rakesh Mali, a forest volunteer who had been alerted by locals to the animal’s presence in nearby bushes. The leopard pounced on Mali, causing leg injuries, before sprinting approximately 400 meters through the market toward a busy liquor shop located near the SBI Chauraha.

As the animal reached the shop, it attacked 40-year-old Fateh Lal Koli, who was sitting outside the premises. The leopard then charged into the store, mauling 25-year-old salesman Sanjay Gurjar. Despite sustaining injuries to his nose, back, and other parts of his body, Gurjar managed to escape the building. Following the escape, local residents acted quickly to contain the threat by pulling down the shop’s metal shutter from the outside, effectively trapping the animal until professional help could arrive.

Rescue Operation and Animal Welfare

The rescue effort required the coordination of forest department personnel from Tonk and a specialized team from the Jaipur Zoo. The entire event, including the leopard’s initial entry into the shop and the resulting panic, was captured on CCTV cameras. Police cordoned off the area and deployed personnel to manage the large crowds that gathered to watch the operation. Forest officials launched a rescue operation, calling in a team equipped with tranquilizer guns.

Senior Veterinary Officer Ashok Tanwar, who led the rescue, confirmed the animal was an adult male estimated to be four to five years old. Tanwar noted that while he has participated in over 60 wildlife rescues, this was his first experience extracting a leopard from inside a liquor store. The animal was sedated after a nearly five-hour operation and subsequently transported to the Tonk forest division office for a medical examination.

Medical Status and Regional Context

The three injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. While Rakesh Mali received local care, both Sanjay Gurjar and Fateh Lal Koli were referred to a higher medical center due to the severity of their injuries.

Virendra Singh Krishniya, the Deputy Conservator of Forests, explained that the forests surrounding Todaraisingh support a significant leopard population. He stated that the animal likely strayed into the town from its natural habitat. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led the wild animal to enter the populated town center. As of the latest reports, the animal remains under the care of the forest department following its successful capture.
