United States Secretary of Education Linda McMahon created a parody of Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” to address the issue of student loan fraud, posting the video to X, formerly known as Twitter.
McMahon’s “Merry Christmas, Taxpayers!”
McMahon, clad in a sequined jacket reading “Make Education Great Again,” performed the parody, framing it around alleged attempts to fraudulently obtain student aid. In the video, she adapted the classic story to focus on individuals attempting to steal “billions of dollars” through schemes involving fake students and manipulated paperwork.
“You know the story of a green little thief who tiptoed through Whoville and caused holiday grief?” McMahon said in the video. “Well, this year, a new crew tried to assemble their feet, sneaking and scheming to swipe Student Aid neat. They slithered through paperwork, schemed with delight, like adding fake students deep into the night. They dreamed of a sack stuffed to the brim with billions of dollars.”
The video concludes with McMahon stating the alleged fraudsters were apprehended, noting “they just got caught in their disguises” rather than experiencing a change of heart. The video has received criticism online from various users.
