Matthew Knies will center a new second line alongside John Tavares and Matias Maccelli. Berube is aiming for this trio to establish a dominant presence in the offensive zone. “J.T. is a guy that, really, when you get a territorial game in the offensive zone with him, that’s where he does his work, right? He’s so heavy on pucks and strong, and he makes little subtle plays. And scores goals inside that slot area,” Berube said. “With Knies, he can get in there and help on the forecheck and be strong on pucks. And Maccelli, his game’s getting better, in my opinion. He’s starting to see the ice better and making some plays.”
Max Domi will return to center the fourth line after a brief stint on Matthews’ wing. Rookie Easton Cowan will also make his return to the lineup, slotting into a more defensively-focused role on the third line, replacing Nick Robertson, who will be a healthy scratch for the first time this season. Berube emphasized Cowan’s energy and need to manage the puck effectively while playing alongside the larger Nicolas Roy and Dakota Joshua.
