President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered all options explored to secure the extradition of Zaldy Co, a suspect in a large-scale flood aid scam, from Portugal. The move comes following requests from both the Department of Justice and Senator Leila de Lima.
Philippines Pursues Extradition of Flood Scam Suspect
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla stated that Marcos has directed authorities to pursue Co’s extradition. Co is accused of diverting flood aid intended for victims of Typhoon Ondoy in 2009.
Senator De Lima urged Marcos to formally request the deportation of Co from Portugal, citing the long delay in bringing him to justice. She emphasized the need for swift action to ensure accountability for the alleged misuse of funds.
The Philippines is currently exploring legal pathways to facilitate Co’s return. Authorities are working to gather the necessary documentation and coordinate with Portuguese authorities to expedite the extradition process.
Co remains a suspect in the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for flood relief operations. The case has drawn public attention due to the scale of the alleged fraud and the impact on typhoon victims.
