Participants at the meeting discussed the current status of initiatives aimed at strengthening Japan’s maritime security capabilities. The Prime Minister emphasized the need to resolutely defend Japan’s territory and territorial waters amid an increasingly severe security environment.

In fiscal year 2026, efforts will continue to strengthen large patrol vessel capabilities and enhance coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces. Japan will also vigorously advance a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” through multifaceted cooperation, including frameworks with the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, and Australia and India.

The Prime Minister also addressed the importance of supporting the Japan Coast Guard, stating the need to improve the working environment and treatment of officers to maintain morale and ensure they can effectively carry out their duties. Appropriate efforts will be undertaken under the leadership of the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, taking into account revisions to the National Security Strategy and related documents.
