McNally Delights Audience on The Tonight Show

Irish comedian Joanne McNally earned a standing ovation during her US television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, delivering a ten-minute stand-up set that targeted dating, turning 40 as a single woman, and her own aversion to keeping secrets. Wearing a sparkling black Adidas jersey on the NBC programme, the 43-year-old Dublin native won over the live studio audience with sharp observations about modern romance and domestic solitude. RTE.ie reported that host Jimmy Fallon rushed over to embrace her at the final punchline, shouting, Come on! What are you talking about? That’s awesome! That’s how you do it! As the room erupted into cheers, Fallon added, Look at that – standing O!

Stand-Up Routine Hits Home on NBC

During her broadcasted set, McNally leaned into self-deprecating humor about her domestic habits and dating life. My favourite hobby is lying in bed, covered in my own ‘chip’ dust, she told the audience, according to Goss.ie. She also joked about scrolling through foreign cleaning videos, declaring, Watching Koreans sanitise their apartments on TikTok – I love it! Hook it to my veins! When men inquired about her hobbies on dates, she replied, Nothing, darling, because it’s spare. Reflecting on past tactics to attract partners, she quipped, I used to lie to men because that’s how you catch them, adding that when asked if she liked sports, she would respond, Come here. I cycle menstrually. That’s enough for me.

Weighing the Controversy Behind the Debut

The successful late-night appearance arrived on the heels of intense online scrutiny regarding the programme’s booking history. Classic Hits reported that McNally faced criticism on social media after Fallon previously welcomed Conor McGregor onto the show. That booking drew anger because a civil jury in Dublin found McGregor liable in November 2024 for sexually assaulting Nikita Hand in 2018, a verdict upheld despite subsequent legal challenges. Critics argued McNally should have boycotted the NBC show.

McNally pushed back forcefully against the demands on TikTok and Instagram. Fashion Times UK reported that she addressed the backlash on 14 October, writing: WTF. Imagine expecting me to turn down an opportunity to do Jimmy Fallon cos of Conor McF***ing Gregor. She added, Surely, the man has ruined enough women’s lives. Imagine every single woman was expected to deplatform / silence / shrink herself from all and any public platform or professional opportunity because it had previously had a bad man on it. I’ll be taking the opportunity, as noted by Goss.ie. Her stance divided some commentators, but drew swift praise from industry peers once the episode aired.
