Indonesia’s Minister of Culture Fadli Zon has advocated for improvements to the Kasepuhan Palace in Cirebon, West Java, to strengthen its role as a cultural education center.
Kasepuhan Palace Modernization
Zon called for modernizing the Museum Pusaka exhibition layout and revitalizing its historical narrative, stating that a more dynamic presentation would help younger generations understand the evolution of architecture and culture from the 15th century to the present. He made the remarks after a visit to the palace on Friday.
The minister described the palace’s Museum Pusaka collection as “extensive and remarkable,” emphasizing that its historical narrative is a national asset that requires stronger storytelling.
“The museum is already relatively good. It only needs improvements in storytelling and exhibition arrangement, especially lighting, to make the narrative stronger and more engaging,” Zon said.
Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Raja Adipati Sultan Sepuh XV Luqman Zulkaedin welcomed the minister’s visit and expressed support for the proposed improvements.
The sultan noted the palace, founded by Sunan Gunung Jati, is approximately 600 years old and represents a continuation of the Pajajaran Kingdom, making it older than the palaces in Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
The palace complex covers around 25 hectares and is enclosed by brick walls constructed by Prince Cakrabuana. Within the complex are structures including Siti Inggil, the Candi Bentar gate, the Museum Pusaka, and the main palace building.
Officials expect the minister’s visit will enhance the palace’s relevance as a center for cultural and educational activities.
