Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has withdrawn from an investigation into a fatal shooting involving ICE, after the FBI blocked access to case materials, according to BCA Superintendent Drew Evans.
FBI Blocks BCA Access to Shooting Investigation
The FBI has decided the BCA will no longer have access to “case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews necessary to complete a thorough and independent investigation,” Evans said in a statement. Without full access, the BCA has “reluctantly withdrawn” from the investigation.
The BCA’s Force Investigations Unit was initially expected to conduct a joint investigation with the FBI into the incident. However, the FBI has since “reversed course,” Evans stated.
Evans said the BCA anticipates the FBI will conduct a “thorough and complete” investigation and remains prepared to resume a joint investigation if the FBI reconsiders its decision.
The BCA’s special unit, created in 2020, independently investigates use-of-force incidents involving law enforcement.
The FBI has been contacted for comment.
