Former President Donald Trump spent Wednesday campaigning in Ohio and Kentucky, focusing on attacks against political opponents and revisiting familiar claims while global attention remained on escalating tensions in the Middle East and severe weather across the U.S.
Midterm Campaign Strategy
Trump visited a pharmaceutical packaging company in Cincinnati, Ohio, recalling memories of time spent there with his father, Fred. He then traveled to Hebron, Kentucky, where he delivered a speech widely seen as a preview of the Republican Party’s strategy for regaining momentum in the upcoming midterm elections.
Ignoring Current Events
The visit occurred as 100 million people across a large swath of the country, from Texas to Lake Michigan, were under severe weather watches, with tornadoes causing damage in Indiana and Illinois. Trump’s speech made no mention of the severe weather, nor did it address recent events including the deaths of Iranian schoolgirls or strikes on oil tankers in the Gulf.
Attacks on Biden and Obama
Trump’s speech included repeated attacks on former President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama. He specifically revisited claims of fraud in the 2020 election and criticized Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, alleging it allowed Iran to pursue nuclear weapons. He stated, “Perhaps you’ll have a weak pathetic president like we’ve had in the past. Like Barack Hussein Obama who signed one of the worst deals ever, with Iran.”
Disputed Claims About Iran Deal
The non-partisan Centre for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation disputes Trump’s characterization of the Obama-era deal, stating that the $100 billion Iran received were Iranian assets previously seized under sanctions, and a $1.7 billion payment was a return of funds held in a U.S. military sales trust fund with accumulated interest.
Targeting Gavin Newsom
Trump also targeted California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has publicly discussed his presidential aspirations. Trump criticized Newsom’s admission of dyslexia, stating, “I don’t want the president of the United States to have a cognitive deficiency.” Newsom’s X account responded with, “He’s talking about himself in the third person again.”
Kentucky Primary Challenge
Trump endorsed Ed Gallrein, a farmer, to challenge Kentucky Republican Representative Thomas Massie, a vocal critic of the former president. Trump described Gallrein as “someone with a big, beautiful brain and a great patriot.” Gallrein echoed Trump’s campaign slogans, chanting “Fight! Fight! Fight!” at the rally.
Economic Promises and Global Tensions
Trump promised that oil prices would decrease, attributing it to a resolution of the conflicts in the Middle East. He suggested that once the attacks on Iran cease, a return to stability could lead to lower prices. He also reiterated his belief that he could resolve the situation and reduce Iran’s military threat.
Speaking on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, Trump stated, “The main thing is we have to win this thing, win it quickly, but win it,” adding, “Most people say it’s already been won. It’s just a question of when. When do we stop?” He offered no further explanation.
