Mismatch in Housing Stock a Key Factor in Waitlist Growth, says Minister

The minister responsible for NL Housing says addressing a mismatch in the current housing stock is a key part of his plan to reduce the growing waitlist for NL Housing units.

Addressing the Waitlist

The Auditor General recently released data highlighting the increasing number of people on the NL Housing waitlist.

Minister Joedy Wall says the government is working to convert existing homes to better suit current needs, as family sizes have generally decreased and demand for one- and two-bedroom units has risen.

β€œWe have units in our stock that were built in the 60s and at that time families were much larger. We have three, four bedroom homes. Unfortunately not every unit is able to be repaired or modified to a smaller unit,” Wall told reporters.

β€œWhat’s currently needed are one and two bedroom homes. Not all units that are four and five bedroom homes can be effectively or financially prudent to have them repaired. So we’re looking at all that.”
