Singapore’s health ministry is exploring ways to expand bone density testing for women through the Healthier SG initiative, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said Sunday.

Supporting Women’s Health

The initiative will focus on increasing access to bone density tests, particularly for women experiencing menopause, a condition that weakens bones and increases fracture risk. Ong made the comments while speaking at the Sembawang West Women’s Festival, which coincided with International Women’s Day.

Ong stated that he has recognized the need for focused attention on women’s health since taking on the health portfolio. He explained that past research has often prioritized male subjects and that women face unique health challenges, including breast cancer, hormonal cycles, and the complications associated with menopause.

Women also frequently serve as family caregivers, leading to increased stress and a greater need for support, Ong added. He affirmed the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) commitment to prioritizing women’s health.

Sembawang GRC MP Poh Li San, who oversees the Sembawang West ward, was also present at the festival held at Woodlands Mart.
