More than 110 people were killed in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Monday night in Gansu Province in northwestern China, according to official media reports on Tuesday.
The state television network CCTV quoted the Disaster Relief Authority in Gansu as saying that the violent earthquake resulted in 100 deaths and dozens of injuries in this province.
CCTV added that in Haidong City, Qinghai Province, the earthquake resulted in 11 deaths and more than 100 injuries.
For its part, the official Chinese News Agency (Xinhua) said that the earthquake caused severe material damage, including the collapse of housing, and forced many residents to flee into the streets.
Xinhua confirmed that the authorities sent relief teams to the area immediately after the earthquake occurred, noting that work to recover victims and search for survivors from under the rubble began at dawn on Tuesday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “all possible efforts” in search and rescue operations.
