A homicide investigation is underway following the death of a prisoner at Mt Eden Corrections Facility. The man died in hospital after a serious assault at the prison in late November.
Prisoner Dies Following Assault
Police were notified by Corrections about the assault on November 29. The male victim was transported to Auckland City Hospital with critical injuries and remained in intensive care until his death yesterday.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time,” Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend said.
Police inquiries are continuing, and a post-mortem will be conducted.
Acting general manager of MECF, Edith Pattinson, stated the death has been a “difficult and distressing time for his loved ones and our thoughts remain with them.”
Corrections is conducting a full review of the incident, and an independent investigation will be carried out by the Corrections Inspectorate. “If these investigations and reviews identify areas where we need to strengthen our processes, we are absolutely committed to acting on these with urgency,” Pattinson said.
Pattinson confirmed the victim was in a shared cell, and the suitability of this placement is being reviewed. She added that the man’s family has been contacted and will be informed of the review’s findings when available.
