A man serving life sentences for the 2005 murder of 17-year-old Jeshma Raithatha died in December while refusing cancer treatment, an inquest has heard.

Details of Death

Victor Dembovskis died at HMP Frankland on December 20, 2023. He was convicted of the rape and murder of Jeshma Raithatha in Greenford, west London. Dembovskis attacked Jeshma as she walked home from school days before her 18th birthday, and her body was discovered eight days later.

Dembovskis fled to his native Latvia after the murder but was extradited back to the UK after leaving his keys at the crime scene.

Inquest Findings

An inquest into Dembovskis’ death was opened at Crook Coroners’ Court on Thursday, January 29. Coroners’ officer Dawn Carter stated that Dembovskis was refusing cancer treatment but accepting pain relief. A post-mortem examination at Newcastle RVI mortuary gave the cause of death as unknown pending histology and toxicology results.

The inquest was adjourned and will be mentioned again on June 2 at 1pm.

Dembovskis was one of five inmates at Frankland to die within eight days last month, between December 17 and December 25. Investigations into each death are underway, and the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will examine the deaths for any potential links, though it is understood they are not directly related.
