Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on October 23, 2026, with an early access period for its single-player campaign beginning on October 16 and the extraction-based DMZ mode unlocking on October 20 for digital pre-orders across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Activision has locked in its release schedule for the upcoming shooter, bringing back the extraction mode with a staggered rollout. Players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase any edition of the title will get their hands on the campaign a week early before the full multiplayer suite goes live.
Staggered Release Dates and Platform Pricing for Modern Warfare 4
The mainline release is scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026. The title drops support for older hardware, leaving PlayStation 4 and Xbox One behind as it lands on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Call of Duty has historically maintained support for outgoing console generations longer than many other franchises because its player base skews older and more price-sensitive than other major AAA shooters.
On PC, the game will be sold through three digital storefronts: Steam, Battle.net, and the Xbox app. Pricing follows the standard tier structure for current-generation releases, with the Standard Edition set at $69.99 and the Vault Edition priced at $99.99, a $30 premium that bundles extra content.
Players who own a previous entry in the series released since 2019 can secure a 10% loyalty discount when pre-ordering the digital Vault Edition on the same platform where they plan to play. To qualify for the discount on Xbox, users must own and have played one of several eligible titles on the same account, including Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020), Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II (2022), Modern Warfare III (2023), Black Ops 6, or Black Ops 7. Meanwhile, holding the game back from subscription services at launch means it will not be available on any tier of Xbox Game Pass right away.
The campaign begins during a full-scale invasion launched by North Korea against the South, plunging the Korean Peninsula into a devastating conflict that threatens wider global stability. The story delivers globe-trotting action and gritty character drama, taking players from close-quarter skirmishes in New York to SAS night raids and high-speed chases across Paris. Captain John Price returns alongside Private Park, now operating as a rogue outlaw and fugitive following the events of Modern Warfare III.
Rebuilt DMZ Mode Arrives Early in the Hajin Exclusion Zone
In a departure from previous entries, the extraction mode DMZ is getting its own early access window. Pre-ordering digitally grants access to the mode starting October 20, three days before the rest of the game unlocks.
The westernmost points of the map feature more rural and militaristic locations, such as the 14th Political Prison and Chang-san Air Base. Players can deploy into the zone to gather resources, complete missions, battle AI forces and rival human operators, and attempt to escape via exfil points.

Persistent Stash and Operator Traits at the Forward Operating Base
Progression in the new DMZ centers around a persistent home base known as the Forward Operating Base. Players manage their operators, store looted gear, and use a 3D Printer to turn resources into gear, while in-game cash can be spent at the Gunsmith to buy attachments or at the Vendor shop for new items and weapons.
Unlike standard multiplayer, items successfully extracted are kept permanently in the FOB stash, while gear carried into a deployment and left behind upon death is lost. The mode features 66 Operator Traits split across three distinct trees: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist. Each tree contains six major traits that remain always visible and 16 minor traits that randomize as progress is made. Warfighter traits include Combat Resistance, Quick Fix, and Viper Sense; Scout traits offer improved Thermal Padding, UAV Upgrade, and Field Crafting; and Survivalist traits provide faster and free revives along with increased consumable duration.
Developer Response Clarifies Single-Player Squad Rules
Confusion arose regarding a potential PvE-only playlist after an early gameplay video showed an option for a Single Squad Mission, which later disappeared from subsequent trailers. Infinity Ward addressed the discrepancy during a community Q&A on Reddit.
“The playlist you saw is a developer playlist that was never intended to be for public use, it lets our team load into a match alone to work, In the shipping game, players choose to be solo by turning off squad fill, but it’s not guaranteed to be only solos in that lobby.”

With campaign early access starting October 16, DMZ following on October 20, and the full multiplayer launch arriving on October 23, players will enter a staggered rollout designed to spread out server load and build momentum ahead of the holiday quarter.
PC System Requirements
Players preparing for the release on desktop computers must meet specific hardware specifications.
