NASA Viking 1 Mission Marked the Start of Martian Surface Exploration

NASA’s Viking 1 mission marked the first successful landing on Mars on July 20, 1976, fundamentally shifting the search for life from science fiction to rigorous scientific exploration. Fifty years later, the data collected during that mission continues to provide a baseline for modern robotic missions like the Perseverance rover.

Viking 1 and the Birth of Martian Surface Exploration

On July 20, 1976, humanity achieved a milestone in planetary science when NASA’s Viking 1 lander touched down in Chryse Planitia and returned the first images from the Martian surface. The mission, managed by NASA’s Langley Research Center (LaRC) in collaboration with the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Martin Marietta Corporation—a company that later became Lockheed Martin—returned the first-ever images from the Martian surface. Weeks later, Viking 2 landed in Utopia Planitia, proving that sustained exploration on the Red Planet was possible.

The Viking 1 lander team was a massive, nationwide collaboration. Martin Marietta Corporation designed and built the lander and provided the Titan launch vehicle for the spacecraft. This mission did more than capture imagery; it transformed Mars from a distant world into a reachable destination. As Aaron McKinnon, the science communication lead for the science directorate at NASA Ames, told Discover, Viking transformed Mars from a world of speculation into one of scientific exploration. The mission laid the scientific and engineering foundation for nearly every Mars surface mission that followed.

Testing for Life: A Revolution in Space Study

In the 1970s, NASA scientists wondered about possible life on Mars. While they were not expecting to find little green men like The Great Gazoo from The Flintstones, they suspected there might be microbial life on the Red Planet. The twin robotic spacecraft, Viking I and Viking II, conducted experiments to detect life. Although they did not provide conclusive answers, they sparked a revolution in space study.

Currently, the legacy of that exploration continues, with a rover dubbed Perseverance on an active mission on Mars. The work that began with Viking continues to inform how humanity approaches the Red Planet today.

Commemorating the 50th Anniversary

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of reaching and landing on the Red Planet, a Lockheed Martin-sponsored event will take place on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Wings Over the Rockies in Colorado. The event, held from 10:30 AM-12:30 PM Mountain Time, features a line-up of presentations on the science behind the Viking Mars program as well as Mars exploration today and in the future.

This interest in planetary science extends to other venues as well. In association with National Mars Week, the UCL-Birkbeck ‘Your Universe’ Festival of Astronomy and Planetary Science is presenting a panel titled Missions to Mars: Current and Future Exploration of the Red Planet. The panel includes Professor Andrew Coates, Deputy Director (Solar System) and Professor of Physics at UCL’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL), who will highlight current and future missions including the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin Rover, Perseverance, the sample return mission, Mars Express, and the MMX sample return mission to the moons of Mars.

The Evolution of Space Missions

Whether through the scientific search for ancient life or the protection of orbital assets, the work that began with Viking 50 years ago remains central to human activity in space. As NASA scientists continue to work to increase an understanding of our planet and our place in the universe, they continue to try to answer the fundamental question: “Are we alone?”
