New Hydraulic Multi-Storey Parking Area Opens In Bali’s Oldest Tourism Hotspot

Sanur, Bali’s oldest tourism resort, is addressing increasing traffic congestion and parking problems with the opening of a new six-story hydraulic parking lot at Bangsal Beach.

Addressing Infrastructure Challenges in Sanur

As Sanur has grown in popularity, its infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with demand, leading to traffic and parking issues. The Denpasar City Government and the Sanur Traditional Village are collaborating on sustainable solutions to mitigate these problems.

The new hydraulic parking lot is intended to alleviate some of the parking difficulties in the area. The facility can accommodate 600 motorcycles and charges a tariff of IDR 2,000 per motorcycle, consistent with other parking areas in Sanur and across Bali.

Soft Launch and Staffing Challenges

The parking lot is currently in a soft-launch trial phase, but is facing challenges with staffing. Sanur Traditional Village Head Ida Bagus Sudiraharja explained that a lack of applicants for parking attendant positions is causing visitors to rush and abandon their motorcycles.

“It’s still a trial run, not yet fully operational. There are quite a lot of visitors, but the workforce isn’t ready yet, so visitors tend to rush and abandon their motorcycles,” Sudiraharja said. He noted the need for coordination with vendors to secure sufficient staff, as the system relies on attendants to manage motorcycle parking and retrieval.

Part of a Larger Plan for Sanur

The new parking project is a collaboration between the Sanur Traditional Village and a Jakarta-based vendor, and serves as a pilot project for Bali. A 10-year management agreement is in place, with a profit-sharing system of 30% for the Sanur Traditional Village and 70% for the vendor.

This project builds on previous efforts to improve transportation in Sanur, including the implementation of a permanent electric shuttle bus service last year. The shuttle bus currently operates from 6 am to 10 pm, with a route connecting Sanur Tourism Junior High School, Sanur Sindu Market, Icon Mall, the Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station at Lake Poso, and Mertasari Beach Parking. The service is set to expand from six to twelve buses to accommodate increased demand.

The long-term goal is to create a park-and-ride network integrating parking facilities with the electric shuttle bus service and other public transportation options in the area.
