LAGOS, NIGERIA – A significant $400 million investment is poised to bolster Nigeria’s digital infrastructure as Tetracore Energy Group, in collaboration with Huawei and Inspirive Technologies, announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art data center. The project signals a growing commitment to localized data solutions within the rapidly expanding Nigerian technology landscape.
The planned 20-megawatt facility, designed to meet Tier III standards, will be located at Tetracore’s energy park in Atakobo, Ogun State. Construction is anticipated to span 10 to 12 months, bringing a substantial increase in data processing and storage capacity to the region.
Nigeria’s Data Center Market: A Surge in Demand
This development arrives amidst a period of robust growth for Nigeria’s data center market. Driven by increasing demand from enterprises, public sector organizations, and a burgeoning startup ecosystem, the need for local data storage and processing capabilities has never been greater. According to Data Center Map, Nigeria currently hosts approximately 25 data centers operated by 15 companies. Equinix, a leading colocation provider, recently announced a $22 million data center investment in Lagos, as reported in November of last year, further demonstrating the market’s attractiveness.
Powering the Future: The Role of Natural Gas
A key differentiator of this project is its innovative approach to power. The data center will be powered by a dedicated 100-megawatt on-site independent power plant within the Tetracore Energy Park. This park leverages a 6.2 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) natural gas supply, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy source. This integration of energy and technology is crucial for long-term economic growth, according to industry experts.
“Sustainable digital transformation is fundamentally dependent on reliable energy infrastructure,” stated Olakunle Williams, President and CEO of Tetracore Energy Group. “This project reflects our ability to integrate energy and technology at scale, creating platforms that enable long-term economic growth. The Tetracore Energy Park was deliberately designed to support projects of this magnitude, and this development reinforces our commitment to execution in complex environments.”
Williams Abiola, CTO of Inspirive Technologies, emphasized the project’s impact on Nigeria’s digital foundation: “This development marks a major milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s digital backbone. By combining local expertise with global technology partnerships, we are delivering a scalable, world-class data center capable of supporting enterprise growth, cloud adoption, and long-term digital transformation.”
Huawei Nigeria representatives expressed their pride in contributing their global expertise in data center technologies, stating their commitment to delivering a high-performance, energy-efficient facility aligned with international standards, supporting Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.
The facility is expected to serve a diverse range of sectors, including finance, telecommunications, government, technology, startups, and educational institutions. What impact will this increased capacity have on the cost of digital services for Nigerian consumers?
Tetracore Energy Group, active in Nigeria and Ghana, specializes in gas processing, power generation, and compressed natural gas production. This data center development represents the company’s first foray into the data center market, signaling a strategic diversification of its portfolio.
