Heavy machine gunfire from Israel Defense Forces (IDF) positions in southern Lebanon impacted a UNIFIL patrol near the village of Bastarra on Friday, December 26, 2025, injuring one United Nations peacekeeper. The gunfire followed a nearby grenade explosion.

UNIFIL Patrols Targeted

In a separate incident on Friday, another UNIFIL patrol reported machine gunfire originating from south of the Blue Line, near the village of Kfar Shouba.

UNIFIL had informed the IDF about patrol activities in those areas in advance, following standard procedure for patrols conducted near the Blue Line.

Recent days have also seen instances of local individuals restricting the movement of UNIFIL patrols within the Mission’s area of operations.

Any action that endangers the safety and security of United Nations peacekeepers is unacceptable. A call has been reiterated to all actors to cease activities that put peacekeepers at risk and interfere with their mandated activities supporting the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701.

The parties involved were reminded of their responsibility to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers.
