NVIDIA Halts RTX 50 Super Release Due to Rising GDDR7 Memory Costs

NVIDIA has reportedly halted the release of its GeForce RTX 50 Super graphics cards despite having already distributed units to manufacturing partners.

Supply Chain Hurdles and the GDDR7 Cost Crisis

The highly anticipated RTX 50 Super series, which includes the RTX 5070 Super, 5070 Ti Super, and 5080 Super, is currently in a state of limbo. While hardware units have already reached some of NVIDIA’s manufacturing partners, a sudden and significant rise in the price of GDDR7 memory has forced the company to block any further movement toward retail shelves.

The core of the issue lies in the transition to 3GB memory modules. According to reporting from Gry Online, standard RTX 50 series cards utilize 2GB memory chips costing approximately 20 USD each. In contrast, the 3GB modules required for the Super variants command prices as high as 60 to 70 USD per chip. This price disparity creates a production cost that, if passed on to the consumer, would likely result in retail pricing that the market would reject.

Impact on the RTX 5050 and Market Strategy

The volatility in the DRAM market is not only affecting the high-end Super series but is also disrupting plans for more budget-friendly hardware. The GeForce RTX 5050 9GB model is also facing an indefinite sales freeze. Industry reports suggest that this specific card requires three memory modules, generating a manufacturing cost of roughly 200 USD for the memory alone. Because this cost would inevitably be pushed to the end user, analysts suggest there is little incentive to launch the product when more capable alternatives exist at similar price points.

NVIDIA’s current strategy appears to be focused on managing existing stock to fill gaps in the consumer market. This is evidenced by the return of the older RTX 3060 to retail availability. However, experts noted by Gry Online suggest that this is a stopgap measure with limited consumer value, as the older card remains relatively close in price to the more technologically advanced RTX 5060.

The outlook for a resolution to these supply chain challenges remains pessimistic. Forecasts currently indicate that the memory market will remain unstable through 2030. The primary driver of this sustained shortage is the rapid expansion of the robotics industry, which is expected to absorb a significant portion of future DRAM production.
