NYC Snowstorm: Flights Canceled, City Shuts Down ❄️

Severe winter weather disrupted travel across the northeastern United States on Friday night and Saturday, leading to the cancellation of around 1,500 flights and a total of 14,000 domestic services nationwide as of mid-morning Saturday.

Northeast Storm Disrupts Travel

Up to six inches of snow fell in parts of New York City, prompting warnings from John F Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International airports. Residents were advised to avoid travel if possible due to treacherous conditions.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul placed half the state under a state of emergency. “I encourage everyone to monitor local forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel. If you have to travel, plan ahead, take it slow, and leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go safely,” Hochul said in a statement.

Workers were pictured shovelling snow in Times Square as visitors braved the freezing temperatures. The last time New York experienced similar heavy snowfall was in 2022, when eight inches fell.

A state of emergency was also declared in New Jersey. State Governor Tahesha Way stated, “This storm will cause dangerous road conditions and impact holiday travel.” She urged travellers to avoid travel during the storm to allow crews to clear the roads, advising drivers to plan accordingly and monitor conditions.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams posted on X, stating, “A little bit of that white stuff doesn’t slow down New York City.” He thanked city sanitation and emergency management teams for their work and encouraged residents to shovel sidewalks to ensure safe passage.

Visitors Payton Baker and Kolby Gray, celebrating their third anniversary in New York, noted the cold and unexpected conditions. “The city is working pretty well to get all the roads salted and everything, so it’s all right,” Ms. Baker said.

According to forecasters at the National Weather Service, the storms had subsided by Saturday, though flurries continued in some areas. They continued to warn of potential power outages and falling trees amid the ongoing severe conditions.
