Oil Prices Surge: Iran-US Ship Attacks Hit Hormuz Strait

Crude oil prices surged Sunday as the United States and Iran neared the brink of renewed war following attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

  • West Texas Intermediate (May): Rose approximately 7% to $89.74 per barrel.
  • Brent (June): Increased nearly 5.8% to $95.59.
  • Military Action: U.S. Navy seized an Iranian container ship in the Gulf of Oman.

Naval Escalation in the Gulf

President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy fired on and subsequently took custody of an Iranian container ship in the Gulf of Oman. The seizure occurred after the vessel attempted to bypass a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, according to a Truth Social post.

The military action followed a series of attacks on Saturday in the Strait of Hormuz. Revolutionary Guard gunboats fired on a tanker, while the United Kingdom Maritime Operations Centre reported that another container ship was struck by an unknown projectile.

Diplomatic Stalemate and Threats

The escalation comes as a ceasefire agreement between the two nations is set to expire this week. President Trump characterized the weekend attacks on shipping as a “total violation” of the truce.

The U.S. President further threatened to destroy every bridge and power plant in Iran if its leadership refuses to accept a deal with the United States.

While talks were proposed for Monday in Islamabad, Pakistan, Iran has stated it will not attend. State news agency IRNA reported that Tehran’s refusal is based on the ongoing U.S. naval blockade and other grievances.

Volatility in the Strait

Tensions shifted rapidly after a brief period of perceived optimism late last week. Oil prices had initially tumbled on Friday after Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz open to commercial traffic following a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Lebanon.

However, Tehran soon reinstated the previous transit conditions. When President Trump refused to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports, Tehran reversed its position and declared the strait closed until the blockade is removed.
