Ontario buys private jet as Ford faces criticism over timing

The Ontario government has purchased a $28.9 million private jet for Premier Doug Ford to facilitate extensive travel across the province and to the United States.

  • Aircraft: Pre-owned 2016 Challenger 650
  • Cost: $28.9 million
  • Purpose: Provincial travel and U.S. trips to address potential tariffs

The premier’s office confirmed the acquisition of the 2016 Challenger 650, stating the aircraft is necessary for the premier’s regular travel and frequent trips to the U.S. to “help make the case against President Trump’s tariffs.”

In a statement defending the expenditure, the government noted the cost is significantly lower than similar acquisitions by other jurisdictions. The province pointed to Quebec’s $107 million spend on a fleet of three Challenger 650s and the federal government’s $753 million purchase of six Global 6500 jets.

The announcement comes weeks after Ontario seized ownership of Billy Bishop Airport. Plans are currently underway to extend the airport’s runway to accommodate jet traffic.

According to the company’s website, the Challenger 650 features a “spacious interior” and is equipped with seating for up to 12 passengers.

Opposition Slams Doug Ford Private Jet Purchase

Opposition leaders have criticized the timing and necessity of the purchase. Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles described the move as “terrible timing,” arguing that Ontarians are currently struggling.

Stiles suggested that the premier should instead utilize existing government aircraft or take commercial flights. “It tells you now how out of touch he is, that he doesn’t even take regular flights like the rest of us,” Stiles said.

Liberal MPP John Fraser also questioned the need for a dedicated aircraft, stating that no previous Ontario premier since Confederation has required a personal jet.

Fraser argued that chartering aircraft would be more cost-effective and efficient, adding that the purchase is “tired and out of touch” while citizens struggle with the cost of gas and groceries.
