The group of 95 Indonesian citizens returned home from Mecca’s immigration detention center, consisting of 11 males and 84 females, according to a statement released by the Foreign Ministry on Friday, January 16.

The ministry also facilitated the repatriation of one Indonesian national who is paralyzed due to illness.

The 96 Indonesians arrived in Jakarta on a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight at 9 a.m. local time on Friday.

The repatriation was the result of collaborative efforts between the Consulate General and the Foreign Ministry’s protection and services team, who provided consular services, coordinated with Saudi authorities, and issued “travel document in lieu of passport” (SPLP) for the Indonesian nationals.

Upon arrival in Indonesia, the ministry’s Directorate for the Protection of Indonesians coordinated with the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, as well as customs and immigration authorities, to continue the repatriation process.

The Indonesian government remains committed to providing optimum protection, services, and accompaniment for Indonesian nationals both domestically and abroad, including those facing difficulties or deportation.

Foreign Minister Sugiono announced on Wednesday, January 14, that the government repatriated 27,768 Indonesian nationals throughout 2022. These individuals were returned from various emergency situations, including armed conflicts, and rescued from criminal enterprises such as online gambling and scams.

Sugiono emphasized that the protection of Indonesians is a central tenet of Indonesia’s diplomacy, aligning with the Indonesian Constitution, which mandates the government to protect all Indonesian people.
