Pakistan launched airstrikes targeting militant groups within Afghanistan early Monday, resulting in reported casualties, in response to recent attacks on Pakistani soil. The strikes targeted locations along the border, with officials stating the operation aimed to disrupt terrorist safe havens.
Pakistan-Afghanistan Border Strikes
The Pakistani military stated it conducted strikes against seven terrorist camps located along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. These actions were taken in response to a surge in attacks, including recent suicide bombings, within Pakistan, according to a statement released by the armed forces.
Afghanistan’s foreign ministry condemned the strikes, calling them a violation of its sovereignty and promising an “appropriate response.” Officials in Kabul have not yet specified what that response will entail.
Pakistan has accused Afghan-based militants of being responsible for cross-border attacks. The Pakistani government asserts these groups are undermining regional stability. The strikes were aimed at groups Pakistan blames for these attacks, CNN reported.
The Guardian reported a surge in attacks within Pakistan prior to the strikes, prompting the military action. Details regarding the number of casualties resulting from the airstrikes are still emerging, but reports indicate fatalities have occurred.
Al Jazeera reported that the strikes occurred in areas bordering Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The region has seen increased militant activity in recent months.
