Patrick Kane is officially back in Chicago. On Thursday, the Blackhawks announced that the veteran forward has signed a two-year contract valued at $16 million, carrying an annual salary cap hit of $8 million.

The signing marks a homecoming for the 37-year-old, who was originally selected first overall by Chicago in the 2007 NHL Draft. As RDS reported, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson expressed pride in bringing the franchise legend back to the United Center, noting Kane’s history of success at the highest level of the sport.

Production and Legacy in the NHL

Kane joins the Blackhawks following a productive season with the Detroit Red Wings, where he recorded 16 goals and 41 assists for 57 points in 67 games. His performance last season reinforced his status as one of the league’s most consistent offensive threats; Radio-Canada noted that Kane is one of only two active NHL players to have recorded at least 40 points in each of the last 19 seasons, sharing that distinction with Alex Ovechkin.

Throughout his career, Kane has reached several historic milestones. On January 29, 2026, he surpassed Mike Modano to become the highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history. By the end of the season, his career totals stood at 1,400 points—including 508 goals and 892 assists—across 1,369 regular-season games with the Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and Red Wings.

The return of Kane provides a veteran presence for a Chicago roster that has been heavily focused on developing younger talent, most notably Connor Bedard. Bedard, the team’s first-overall selection in the 2023 draft, had publicly voiced his support for a potential reunion with the winger earlier this week.

During this time, he reportedly narrowed his options to a select few teams, with Yellow reporting that he seriously considered a return to his roots with the Buffalo Sabres before ultimately choosing the Blackhawks.

The move has also drawn attention to the evolving nature of NHL free agency, with prediction markets now actively tracking player signings.
