Pereira’s 90th-Minute Goal Secures TFC Draw vs Orlando City SC

Toronto FC salvaged a 3-3 draw against Orlando City SC at BMO Field on Wednesday night, keeping their Eastern Conference playoff hopes alive as Matheus Pereira scored in the 90th minute, though the result left Canadian forward Theo Corbeanu feeling like it was a defeat.

Corbeanu Breaks Out in Six-Goal Thriller

Burlington, Ontario native Theo Corbeanu enjoyed his first career two-point match by registering a goal and an assist for Toronto (7-10-12).

It’s a draw, it’s not a loss, but it really feels like a loss, Corbeanu said.

It’s very disappointing.

Despite the sting of surrendering two leads, Corbeanu remains confident in the club’s postseason chase, stating, if our belief remains as high as it’s been recently I think we can definitely do something and get this team into the playoffs, where it belongs.

The action-packed fixture saw Lewis Morgan open the scoring for Toronto in the 27th minute by heading in a long cross from Corbeanu, according to The Globe and Mail. Orlando responded in first-half stoppage time when Martín Ojeda converted from the penalty spot following a handball violation off Pereira’s left arm. Early in the second half, Toronto regained the advantage when Maxime Crépeau stopped Niklas Dorsch, but the rebound bounced directly to Corbeanu for his third goal of the campaign.

Late Drama and Defensive Breakdowns

Orlando clawed back once again when Antoine Griezmann volleyed home an equalizer in the 87th minute. Just six minutes prior, Daryl Dike had put the visitors ahead by pouncing on a loose ball inside the box after Griezmann left alone a pass from Ivan Angulo, as detailed by The Globe and Mail. Toronto head coach Robin Fraser felt Alonso Coello was fouled in the buildup to Dike’s goal, noting that he felt such challenges have regularly been whistled this year.

With Toronto trailing late, Matheus Pereira rescued a point in the 90th minute by knocking in a rebound for his first career MLS goal, as reported by The Associated Press via Yahoo. The frantic finish mirrored portions of recent fixtures, though Toronto was unable to find a late winner this time around.

Toronto Gains Ground in Wild-Card Race

The single point kept Toronto in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points, tying them with New York City FC, though NYCFC holds the tiebreaker. Losses by New York City, FC Cincinnati, and Red Bull New York on Wednesday allowed Toronto to gain ground in the congested four-way race for the eighth and ninth wild-card spots. Cincinnati and Red Bull New York sit ahead at 36 points.

While Toronto extended its home unbeaten streak to seven games (3-0-4) since the FIFA World Cup break, they face a daunting finish. Four of their final five regular-season matches will be played away from home, starting with a crucial visit to Red Bull New York on Saturday. Corbeanu emphasized the team’s readiness for the upcoming challenge, noting that they have made the most of playing in front of their home supporters but must now take that fight on the road.
