Phil Woolas, a former Labour MP and minister, has died at the age of 66 after a years-long battle with brain cancer, his family announced Saturday.

Woolas served as the Member of Parliament for Oldham East and Saddleworth from 1997 to 2010, holding several ministerial positions under both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
The Scunthorpe-born politician held roles focused on local government, environment, and immigration during his time in government.
According to a statement released by his family and close friends, Woolas battled glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, for more than a year. He is survived by his wife, Tracey, his sons Josh and Jed, a new grandson, and numerous friends and former colleagues.
