Beginning in 2027, Netflix will publish its “What We Watched” engagement report once per year during the first quarter. This policy change, outlined in the company’s second-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, marks a departure from the bi-annual cadence the platform has maintained since December 2023.

According to the streamer’s official correspondence, the decision aims to decouple viewership data from quarterly earnings results. Executives stated the goal is to ensure that financial metrics, specifically revenue and operating profit, remain the primary focus of quarterly updates. Despite the change in frequency, Netflix confirmed it will continue to provide title-by-title data and total view hours, alongside its established weekly Top 10 lists covering more than 90 countries.

Top Performers in the First Half of 2026

The final bi-annual report, covering January through June 2026, highlighted distinct leaders in film and television.

• “His & Hers”: The most-watched TV show of the period, debuting Jan. 8 and logging 104 million views.
• “War Machine”: The leading film, accumulating 146.9 million views.
• “Bridgerton” Season 4: Tallying 100.2 million views, it joined “His & Hers” as the only two TV series to surpass the 100 million view milestone during the first half of the year.

The report also demonstrated the long-tail performance of major titles. “Stranger Things 5,” which concluded on Dec. 31, 2025, secured 55.6 million views in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, Harlan Coben’s “I Will Find You” reached the No. 3 spot on the TV list with 63.9 million views, despite debuting less than two weeks before the reporting window closed.

Defining the “View” Metric

To interpret these figures, it is necessary to understand how Netflix calculates success. The platform defines a “view” by dividing the total hours viewed by a title’s runtime.

This adjustment notably altered the rankings of legacy hits, allowing shorter-format series to compete more effectively against expansive projects. The streamer’s current approach contrasts with traditional linear television, which relies on audience counts during specific broadcast windows.

The data reveals a shift in consumer behavior compared to the previous year.

Transparency and Market Context

Netflix’s decision to move to annual reports arrives amid heightened industry scrutiny regarding viewer retention, particularly following the company’s 2025 decision to stop reporting quarterly subscriber numbers. According to industry analysis, while competitors like Prime Video have introduced their own Top 10 lists, these alternatives often omit the specific numerical viewership figures that characterize the Netflix reports.

The report also signaled a strategic omission: video podcasts. These were excluded from the latest data dump and categorized under “Other Shows.” Variety noted that while the format launched earlier this year, internal data suggests that engagement is primarily driven by mobile and daytime viewing. As the streamer moves toward its 2027 annual reporting schedule, the exclusion of such emerging content categories remains a point of observation for industry analysts assessing the platform’s diverse programming mix.
