Rare Whitespotted Wedgefish Filmed Leading School of Fish in Shark Bay

The encounter, which occurred just 200 metres from the shoreline, caught the attention of wildlife enthusiasts after Mason, the founder of Return To The Ocean, shared the footage on social media. While the behavior of marine life can often be difficult to interpret, the video provides a rare look at the Rhinidae family species in its natural habitat.

A Rare Encounter in Shark Bay

Mason’s drone footage reveals an unusual formation, with the wedgefish acting as the focal point for a group of smaller fish. According to reporting on the event, the videographer initially struggled to identify the subjects moving through the water.

As the drone maintained its position for approximately 10 minutes, Mason observed that the school of fish—including juvenile golden trevally, several cobia, and likely a sharksucker or remora—mirrored the wedgefish’s movements.

The Significance of the Whitespotted Wedgefish

The whitespotted wedgefish is currently classified as critically endangered. Because these creatures are rarely documented in such close proximity to shore, the footage offers a valuable, if anecdotal, glimpse into their behavior. Mason noted the rarity of the sighting during his time flying the drone in search of wildlife.
