Researchers from the Natural History Museum of Denmark have established a new genus of rove beetles named Luffy, after the rubber-bodied protagonist of the manga and anime series One Piece. The discovery, led by Alexey Solodovnikov and PhD student Fang-Shuo Hu, was detailed in a study published June 5, 2026, in the peer-reviewed, open-access journal sciencedaily.com.
Anatomical Inspiration for the Name
While the name may appear playful, the researchers selected it based on specific morphological characteristics. Members of the Luffy genus possess antennae, maxillary palps, and mandibles that are exceptionally long and slender compared to closely related beetles. These stretched proportions reminded the scientists of the fictional character Monkey D. Luffy’s ability to freely extend and enlarge his limbs.
Currently, the genus encompasses two identified species found in Southeast Asia:
- Luffy schillhammeri: Discovered in the broadleaf forests of Yunnan Province, China. Its name honors Dr. Harald Schillhammer of the Natural History Museum Vienna for his outstanding and long-term contributions to rove beetle research.
- Luffy nika: Found in Louang Namtha in northern Laos. The species name refers to Luffy’s “Gear 5” Devil Fruit awakening, known as “Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.” This beetle features prominent white bands of hair across its body and elytra, echoing the white, smoke-covered appearance of the character’s Nika transformation.
Filling an Evolutionary Gap
The identification of the Luffy genus provides significant taxonomic value by addressing a missing link in the evolution of the subtribe Staphylinina. To reach their conclusion, Hu and Solodovnikov conducted a broad review of every known genus in the Ocypus group, including groups with controversial or uncertain positions such as Staphylinus, Apostenolinus, and Acupronotes.
The researchers focused on shared derived characteristics, or synapomorphies, that define the Eucibdelus lineage.
One such characteristic is the presence of dorsal ridge teeth on the left mandible. While Luffy beetles possess these dorsal ridge teeth, they differ from the rest of the lineage because their labrum is not completely sclerotized. Because the genus exhibits a unique combination of characters intermediate between other members of the Ocypus-group and the Eucibdelus lineage, the researchers concluded that Luffy is likely the sister group to the entire Eucibdelus lineage.
Public Engagement and Biodiversity
The research team intends for the connection to popular culture to serve as an accessible entry point for the general public to learn about biological taxonomy. By linking a new genus to a globally recognized character, the scientists hope to increase awareness of biodiversity and encourage younger generations to pursue classification research with an adventurous spirit.

The discovery also highlights the vast amount of undocumented insect life on Earth. According to timesofindia.indiatimes.com, beetles are among the most diverse animal groups, with roughly 400,000 formally described species. However, scientists estimate that well over a million species may have yet to be identified. The discovery of the Luffy genus demonstrates that even extensively studied groups continue to reveal unexpected diversity.
