Rēzekne’s mayor, Aleksandrs Bartaševičs, has been denied access to state secrets required for his position, prompting a call for his resignation from the Minister of Smart Administration and Regional Development. Raimonds Čudars has requested Bartaševičs step down immediately.
State Security Service Findings
The request for resignation follows information provided by the State Security Service regarding the denial of access to state secrets for Bartaševičs, who is Chairman of the Rēzekne City Council and a member of the Together for Latvia party.
If Bartaševičs does not resign, he is required to submit a written explanation within five working days. The minister will then make a decision based on the provided explanation.
Latvian Television reported last week that a local government leader in the Latgale region had not received clearance to work with state secrets, though the mayor’s name and the specific local government were not disclosed at that time.
