More than 5,000 passengers booked on a seven-day Royal Caribbean cruise to the sunny Bahamas found themselves diverted to chilly Halifax, Nova Scotia, after a developing East Coast storm forced a last-minute itinerary change on October 18, 2026.
Storm Warnings Rewrite the Oasis of the Seas Itinerary
Passengers boarding Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas in Bayonne, New Jersey, on October 18, 2026, anticipated a warm-weather getaway featuring stops in Florida and the Bahamas. Severe weather forecasts off the East Coast prompted the cruise line to cancel planned visits to Port Canaveral, Royal Caribbean’s private island destination Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Nassau.
Instead, the line sent one of the world’s largest cruise ships north toward Atlantic Canada carrying 5,734 passengers.
The notification arrived just hours before departure, leaving little time to adjust packing lists meant for swimsuits and sandals. According to travel agent Barbara Libbin with I Love Ears Travel, the storm system—identified as Subtropical Storm Josephine sitting and spinning a few hundred miles off the Mid-Atlantic coast—prompted a series of rapid operational changes across multiple sailings. Similar disruptions affected Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas, which was rerouted southbound to Portland, Maine, on a nine-night Canada and New England sailing to avoid the weather.
Marie Durning, a New Jersey resident, told CTV News that her husband remarked, This is a joke, right?
She added that she had her winter hat and earmuffs but forgot her scarf.

Passengers Pack Winter Coats Instead of Swimsuits
Daytime temperatures in Halifax hovered in the upper 40s to low 50s. Nighttime lows dipped into the 30s during the October visit.
This brought a sharp contrast to the 80-degree weather typical of the Bahamas at this time of year, and the abrupt change from the tropics to the Canadian maritime left families scrambling at the gangway.
Some travelers faced even steeper hurdles before reaching the ship. Actress Mikayla Iverson posted a viral video from Newark Airport after learning of the redirection just twelve hours before sailing, noting that her family lacked appropriate clothing for Nova Scotia.
For Canadian passengers, the diversion meant traveling hundreds of miles south only to be brought straight back home. Nicholas Meli drove seven hours with his family from Toronto to New Jersey to board the ship. I am already from Canada, and I wanted to go to the Bahamas,
Meli told reporters.

Other travelers shared mixed reactions while docked. Walter MacDonnell of Hamilton, Ontario, expressed pleasure at returning to a familiar destination, noting that he was glad the diversion brought him back to a city he loves visiting. Meanwhile, Ron Green of Virginia and the Hicks family from Philadelphia noted that despite the unexpected change in climate, they adjusted their plans to salvage the remainder of their vacation.
Halifax Welcomes the Diverted Cruise
Initially, Royal Caribbean informed guests that the substitute stop in Halifax would last just 14 hours overnight from 6 p.m. on Tuesday to 8 a.m. on Wednesday. However, shipboard leadership later secured additional schedule flexibility, extending the stay until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21 to provide a full day ashore.
Passengers utilized the extra hours to explore the local waterfront, shop, and take harbor excursions. Dwayne Hicks, visiting from Philadelphia with his family for the first time, advised fellow travelers to air their frustrations before boarding so they could enjoy the destination after arriving in Nova Scotia.
It is the way the dice fell for us, but I’m grateful and I’m going to make the best of it. And I have found out that Halifax is a beautiful city.

Royal Caribbean Issues Compensation and Returns Home
To offset the disappointment of a canceled tropical itinerary, Royal Caribbean issued financial compensation structured by stateroom category alongside refunds for pre-purchased shore excursions at the missed ports of call. The cruise line also addressed passport and travel documentation requirements in its passenger notifications, cautioning that certain nationalities might require a visa to enter Canada unexpectedly.
| Stateroom Type | Onboard Credit |
|---|---|
| Inside and ocean-view staterooms | $200 per guest |
| Balcony staterooms | $300 per guest |
| Suites | $600 per guest |
| Third and additional guests sharing a stateroom | $100 per person |
In addition to the onboard credit, passengers received a 50% future cruise credit applicable toward another sailing, with bookings required by October 18, 2027. Following its departure from Halifax on Wednesday evening, the Oasis of the Seas set course for three days at sea before completing its voyage in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Sunday, October 25.
