Acclaimed Actor Sam Neill Dies at 78
Acclaimed actor Sam Neill, celebrated for his versatile performances across more than five decades of film and television, has died at the age of 78. His family announced his death on Monday, stating that the loss was “sudden and unexpected.” While the family did not specify a cause of death, fellow actor Rima Te Wiata, who appeared opposite Neill in the 2016 comedy Hunt for the Wilderpeople, told the New Zealand Herald that Neill had been suffering from pneumonia prior to his death. Te Wiata, who spoke on the outlet’s video show ‘Ryan Bridge TODAY,’ noted that Neill was not scared of dying but would likely be “annoyed” by it. “It really sucks, actually,” she told the outlet. “I think he would be like: ‘For goodness sake, I got over my cancer. And now look, now I get pneumonia. What next?’”
The actor had previously shared his health journey in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, where he revealed he was “possibly dying” with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After several years of treatment for blood cancer, Neill declared himself cancer-free in April. His family noted that his death was “blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
A Career Defined by Versatility
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill’s career path could have been entirely different. In another lifetime, he might have become a lawyer, but he failed all four of his units during the first year of law school. He instead cut his dramatic teeth on the theater stages of Wellington before working for the New Zealand National Film Unit and appearing in TV movies during the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in the form of Roger Donaldson’s 1977 thriller Sleeping Dogs.

Neill was perhaps best known for his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, starring alongside Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough. His filmography, however, spanned a vast range of genres. Two years after his 1977 breakthrough, he starred in Gillian Armstrong’s period drama My Brilliant Career opposite Judy Davis. He later became a genre icon through roles in Omen III: The Final Conflict and Possession. His chilling delivery of the line “Where we’re going, we won’t need eyes to see” in Event Horizon helped the film become a cult classic. Throughout his career, Neill moved seamlessly between big-budget blockbusters like The Hunt for Red October and indie dramas such as The Piano, in which he played the repressed and violent Stewart.
Tributes from Costars
Tributes have poured in from around the world. Laura Dern called him a “beloved lifetime friend,” writing on Instagram: “He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.” Jeff Goldblum added simply: “The next great adventure begins.” Director Steven Spielberg said he “adored making all the Jurassic movies with him” and added, “We will always have our Jurassic family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world.”

Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards, who played the children Tim and Lex Murphy in Jurassic Park, also paid tribute. Mazzello, 42, recalled Neill’s kindness, noting that the actor had left a supportive comment on one of his Instagram posts in March, writing, “All the best, Joey.” Mazzello said, I didn’t even realize he was following me… But he was rooting for me. He was still rooting for me 33 years later. He added that the filming of Jurassic Park was a “defining moment” in his life, and that Neill was an “amazing scene partner.”
Jane Campion, who directed Neill in The Piano, reflected on their long friendship. She recalled meeting him in a cafe in Vulcan Lane, Auckland, to discuss the film. Sam was kind, committed and supportive, she wrote. “He looked after me and actually everyone on the set.” She noted that they often confided in one another and discussed life and the end of life. Campion also recalled seeing him earlier this year at his winery with his partner, Heather.
At the time of his passing, Neill had continued working, with two final roles currently in post-production: the Philippines-set romantic comedy The Last Resort and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
