Sensor Tower data shows Grand Theft Auto 6 is crushing prior industry titans, pulling in 6.08 million digital preorders and $594 million in revenue by October 13 as Rockstar gears up for its November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Preorder Numbers Leave Modern Warfare 2 Behind
Grand Theft Auto 6 sits 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in digital preorders at the same point before launch, according to analytics collected by Sensor Tower and reported by GamesIndustry.biz. Modern Warfare 2 previously set a high-water mark with an $800 million opening weekend, but Rockstar’s upcoming title has completely outstripped that trajectory in U.S. digital sales.
The analytics firm notes that these figures exclude physical boxed copies entirely. Of the 6.08 million digital units logged by October 13, 74% landed on PlayStation platforms while 26% went to Xbox. Most buyers opted for the $100 ultimate edition. Industry analysts surveyed by GamesIndustry.biz earlier this year expect total first-year sales to range anywhere from 30 million to upwards of 50 million copies.

Trailers Reveal Intimate Character Moments and Chaos
Rockstar rolled out a surprise launch trailer showing protagonists Jason and Lucia driving through Vice City during a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. The footage captures a tender shower scene featuring Lucia’s monitoring anklet. The 90-second trailer details the game’s plot, introducing newcomers to the protagonists and noting in its official description, Vice City, USA,
and that Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them.
The description adds, But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.
The short trailer sees the dual protagonists open up about their struggles, with Jason discussing obstacles faced after a less-than-glamorous military departure and sporting long hair for much of the trailer before later appearing short-haired, while Lucia wonders, Are we gonna be OK
amid a storm of crime.
Alongside the quieter character beats, the trailer leans into typical series chaos. The trailer includes scenes of crashing helicopters, grenade launchers, a chopper carrying a chained load of cargo like a wrecking ball to shatter windows, Jason and Lucia jumping off a roof into a hotel pool, and a realistic sweat system that makes characters perspire based on dancing intensity. The early response from fans brought massive engagement, with the trailer crossing 1 million views on YouTube in about half an hour, while fan reactions in comments included I thought I would never live this moment,
and We are really at the finish line!!!
Previous series entries utilized various approaches to sex and romance, ranging from implied encounters with sex workers in GTA 3 and humorous introductions like Trevor’s in Grand Theft Auto V, to the famous San Andreas Hot Coffee
mod featuring a playable sex mini-game based on cut content.

Future Development Pipelines at Rockstar
The upcoming release marks Rockstar’s first major single-player launch since Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived in 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One. Studio heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut told Bloomberg that the massive gap between titles will likely not repeat for future projects.
Garbut added: We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.
PlayStation handled the primary marketing push for the launch trailer, which was captured entirely on a PlayStation 5, though the studio did not specify whether this was the base console or a PlayStation 5 Pro. While the November 19 console release date is locked in for current-generation hardware, reports indicate a PC port could follow later.
