Shaun Ryder, the iconic frontman of the Happy Mondays, is no stranger to captivating stories. But even amongst a lifetime of rock ‘n’ roll adventures, one incident stands out: a face-off with a formidable orangutan on a Barbados beach, affectionately – and ominously – nicknamed ‘Jack the Ripper.’ This startling revelation comes ahead of the release of Ryder’s third autobiography and a long-awaited new Happy Mondays album, marking the band’s first studio effort in two decades.

Recalling the recording sessions for the band’s fourth album in 1992, Ryder described the moment the primate emerged from the trees. “This thing just dropped out of the trees right in front of me. It was a f***ing big orangutan,” he told The Sun. Locals had reportedly issued warnings about the ape, but Ryder, fueled by a chaotic lifestyle, felt compelled to confront it.

“I told myself ‘don’t show any fear’ and proceeded to growl at the animal: ‘Grrr, arrrgh, f*** off, just f*** right off,’” Ryder recounted. Remarkably, his aggressive display worked, and the orangutan retreated, leaving him unharmed. The incident is all the more astonishing considering orangutans are not native to Barbados and that Ryder was, at the time, consuming an astonishing amount of crack cocaine – reportedly “50 rocks a day.” Despite this, he maintains it wasn’t a hallucination.

The fourth studio album, born from this period of intense experience, ultimately failed to achieve commercial success, leading to the band’s dissolution the following year. But Ryder’s story doesn’t end there. He also shared tales of being held hostage in Amsterdam for two days, witnessing a shooting, and narrowly avoiding arrest in a heroin den – experiences that paint a vivid picture of a life lived on the edge.

Now a Gogglebox favorite alongside bandmate Bez, Ryder has turned a corner. He achieved sobriety at age 40 and maintains a drug-free home with his wife, Joanne, and their children. His transformation is a testament to the power of support and the possibility of redemption. He credits Joanne with being instrumental in his recovery, a sentiment he publicly expressed in a heartfelt Instagram post celebrating her birthday.

Ryder playfully describes his current role as a “taxi service” for his daughters, Pearl and Lulu, a far cry from his earlier, more detached relationship with his children from previous relationships. Joanne now manages the television side of his career, capitalizing on his enduring appeal and reality TV appearances, including multiple stints on ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ in both Australia and South Africa. He and Bez recently presented an award at the Brit Awards, solidifying their status as Manchester icons.
