An inquest into the death of Kelly Wilkinson has been abruptly halted following allegations that police advised her to “cool off” and give her estranged husband “a break” days before she was fatally burned, according to multiple reports.

Kelly Wilkinson Murder Inquest Halted

The inquest was suspended on Tuesday after the claims surfaced, prompting a wave of shock and concern. Wilkinson, 39, died in April 2022 after being doused in fuel and set alight in her Gold Coast backyard. Her estranged husband, Brian Johnston, has been charged with her murder.

Evidence presented to the inquest revealed that Wilkinson contacted police several days before her death, reporting ongoing harassment from Johnston. According to reports, police allegedly suggested she “cool off” and allow Johnston some space.

Counsel assisting the coroner, Sergeant Andrew Francis, told the court the allegations were “significant” and required further investigation. The coroner subsequently put the inquest on hold, pending the outcome of a review into the police response.

“In light of the evidence that has come to light today, I am of the view that it is appropriate to suspend the inquest at this time,” the coroner stated. The inquest will remain suspended until further notice.

Johnston remains in custody and is expected to stand trial. The allegations regarding the police advice have sparked calls for a thorough investigation into the handling of Wilkinson’s case.
