Following a 1-2 ODI series loss to England, India captain Shubman Gill has addressed team performance concerns, including middle-order batting failures and player fitness. While speculation swirled regarding Rohit Sharma’s future after the final match at Lord’s, Gill confirmed that no internal discussions regarding the veteran’s retirement have taken place.
Batting Failures and Missed Targets in the Second ODI
The second ODI against England proved to be a turning point in the series, leaving captain Shubman Gill openly frustrated with his team’s inability to capitalize on a promising start. Despite reaching a favorable position after 25 overs, the batting lineup collapsed, ultimately managing only 233 runs. The England team successfully chased the target with four wickets to spare, bringing the series to a pivotal juncture.
Quite disappointing to be honest. We were at a good position after 25 Overs, but we lost too many wickets. We know our tail enders the best batsman, but we expected a lot more from them, Shubman Gill
Gill noted that the team had anticipated a final score exceeding 300 or 310 runs, but the middle-order struggle prevented them from applying pressure on the English bowlers. He specifically pointed to his own dismissal as a moment of regret, noting that being out playing a straight cover drive is never good. Gill further acknowledged that England’s Joe Root proved particularly difficult to contain during the run chase, as the Indian team’s scoring rate of 4-5 runs per over failed to create sufficient pressure.
Fitness Concerns and Long-Term Strategy
Beyond the immediate series results, Gill has raised alarms regarding the physical condition of his squad. As reported, the captain identified recurrent injuries as a significant barrier to team success. These fitness issues are viewed as a potential liability as the team looks toward the 2027 World Cup. Under the guidance of coach Gautam गंभीर (Gautam Gambhir), the team has faced a series of defeats against Australia (1-2), New Zealand (1-2), and England (1-2).
The captain emphasized that the current fitness standards of the players are not adequate, which he believes could prove fatal for the team’s prospects in the 2027 World Cup competition.
Addressing Rohit Sharma Retirement Rumors
The series concluded following a difficult period for the team, which also suffered a clean sweep in the T20 series. The match at Lord’s, which saw Rohit Sharma score 138 runs in a vintage display of batting, was heavily shadowed by media speculation that it would be the veteran’s final appearance in the format. Reports had claimed that the selection committee had already informed Sharma of future plans that did not include him.
Gill moved to dismiss these claims entirely, emphasizing that the rumors were a product of external media discourse rather than internal team reality.
Shubman Gill
In English translation, Gill clarified: Rohit brother has not told us anything about this. We didn’t even get a chance to discuss it. I think all these discussions are limited only to the media; no such discussion has taken place within the team.
Following Gill’s statement, the BCCI shared an interview with Rohit Sharma, in which the veteran addressed the speculation. My job is to bat and contribute to the country. From the day I debuted, such discussions have been going on, and as long as I am here, they will continue. It does not make a difference, Sharma stated regarding the retirement rumors.
