The preliminary hearing for singer David Anthony Burke, known professionally as D4vd, began this week in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom. Burke, 21, faces charges including murder, sexual abuse of a minor, and the destruction of human remains in connection with the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. The ongoing proceedings are intended to determine if there is sufficient evidence for the case to move forward to a full trial.
Graphic Evidence Presented in Court
During the opening day of the hearing, prosecutors presented graphic crime scene evidence for the first time, showing images of the victim’s remains found in September of last year. The body of Celeste Rivas Hernandez was discovered inside a Tesla registered to Burke. According to testimony from a homicide detective, Burke had ordered several items online in the days following the teenager’s death, including chainsaws, an inflatable pool, a shovel, and body bags.
Prosecutors allege that Burke stabbed the teenager before using a chainsaw to dismember her body in an attempt to conceal the killing. They contend that the motive for the crime was the victim’s threat to reveal a relationship with a minor, which prosecutors claim would have destroyed Burke’s multi-million dollar music career.
Impact on the Victim’s Family
The victim’s parents, including her mother Mercedes Martinez, were present in the courtroom throughout the distressing proceedings. Their attorney, Patrick Steinfeld, characterized the experience as a parent’s worst nightmare,
noting that the family had been warned by the District Attorney about the nature of the evidence. Despite advice that they could step out of the courtroom, the parents chose to remain to show support for their daughter.
Steinfeld described the visual evidence as absolutely deplorable,
stating that the condition of the remains made them unrecognizable. Outside the courthouse, Steinfeld told reporters that the family is “horrified” and at a loss for words after hearing the details of the investigation for the first time.
Legal Context and Allegations
Burke, who appeared in court wearing an orange jail uniform and shackled at the wrists and ankles, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The court heard testimony regarding tattoos that allegedly connect the defendant and the victim, including a matching Shhhtattoo on their right index fingers. Additionally, prosecutors referenced a previous hearing in April where they claimed Burke possessed asignificant amount of child pornography on his phone.
Beyond the criminal charges, the victim’s family is currently exploring the possibility of filing a wrongful death lawsuit. Steinfeld stated that the family expressed “disgust” upon learning that Burke had transferred assets, including deeds to two Texas homes, to his mother following the investigation into the death. The family’s legal team indicated they had previously underestimated the defendant’s net worth, which they now describe as being in the millions.
The preliminary hearing is expected to continue for several days as the court reviews the evidence presented by the prosecution.
