Sydney Roosters Withdraw Contract Extension Offer for Sam Walker

The Sydney Roosters have sensationally scrapped their contract extension offer for halfback Sam Walker beyond the 2027 season, upending the NRL player market just days before rival clubs gain legal clearance to negotiate with him on November 1. Fox Sports reported that the 24-year-old had sought to restart negotiations after talks were paused in August due to a disagreement on his pricetag, only for the club to formally withdraw the offer on Monday night.

Roosters Offer Millions to Secure Halfback

Negotiations between the Tri-colours and the halfback had stretched across several months as the club attempted to lock down his long-term future before the November open-market deadline. Zero Tackle reported that the Roosters had offered a four-year extension in August worth $1.1 million per season, totaling $4.4 million. By mid-October, that proposal climbed to $1.3 million annually—reaching $5.2 million over four years—with ratchet clauses that could have pushed the total value closer to $6 million through the end of 2031.

Despite these record-setting financial commitments, discussions collapsed over final terms. The club announced the development on Monday evening, leaving the reigning Test debutant for the Kangaroos facing the final year of his current contract in 2027.

The Roosters released a definitive statement addressing the breakdown in talks, emphasizing their commitment to squad management over individual retention at any cost.

“The Sydney Roosters have this evening advised the management of Sam Walker that the Club’s offer for a contract extension beyond the 2027 season has been withdrawn after the parties were unable to reach an agreement on terms,” Sydney Roosters

The club further defended the decision by pointing to broader organizational goals in their official remarks:

“The Club remains focused on maintaining a Premiership-winning roster, with all recruitment and retention decisions made to support the strength, balance and long-term success of the playing squad.” Sydney Roosters

Broader Market Turbulence and Open Agency

Zero Tackle noted that the decision came just hours after the Canberra Raiders confirmed they had withdrawn their multi-year offer directed at Hudson Young.

With the club-record extension officially off the table, attention turns to the impending open market. Walker is currently with the Kangaroos squad ahead of their World Cup fixture against the Cook Islands, but rival clubs will be free to pursue his signature starting Sunday.
