SK Hynix Shares Volatile After Record $26.5 Billion Nasdaq Debut

The AI-Driven Memory Boom

SK Hynix, the South Korean semiconductor giant, completed a US$26.5 billion listing on the Nasdaq on July 10, marking the largest U.S. debut by a foreign company to date. The American depositary receipts (ADRs) opened at $170 and rose 13% during their first day of trading, eventually closing at $168.01. The stock trades under the ticker symbol SKHYV, with plans to transition to the ticker SKHY on the following Tuesday.

The listing represents a significant milestone for the company, which is the second-most valuable firm in South Korea, trailing only Samsung. By entering the U.S. capital markets, SK Hynix aims to broaden its access to global institutional and retail investors, positioning itself alongside other major U.S.-listed technology companies.

The AI-Driven Memory Boom

The move to the Nasdaq follows a period of intense growth for SK Hynix, fueled by the global artificial intelligence boom. As a primary memory partner for Nvidia, SK Hynix has become a critical player in the AI supply chain. The company specializes in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a sophisticated product created by stacking layers of memory to meet the demanding requirements of AI processors.

According to data from Counterpoint Research, SK Hynix held a 58% global market share in HBM as of the end of the first quarter. This leadership position has led to record-breaking financial performance. In the most recent quarter, the company reported a 198% increase in revenue to approximately $35 billion, with net income soaring 398% and an operating margin of 72%.

SK Hynix Chairman Chey Tae-won, speaking to CNBC, described the current environment as a “dream come true.” Addressing concerns regarding the sustainability of current demand, Chey stated, “The demand is enormous, exponentially, so I don’t really see” signs of a decline. He emphasized that the rise of AI agents and physical robotics has fundamentally changed the memory requirement landscape, suggesting the current cycle may differ from historical boom-bust patterns.

Expansion and Strategic Investments

The proceeds from the $26.5 billion Nasdaq offering are earmarked for aggressive expansion. While the company is investing $4 billion in an advanced packaging plant in Indiana, the bulk of its future capacity growth will occur in South Korea. This includes a massive cluster of chip fabrication plants in Yongin, a project valued at $390 billion.

Despite the current optimism, market analysts and industry observers note that the memory market remains inherently cyclical. Historically, periods of high demand and supply shortages have often been followed by oversupply and sharp price corrections. Investors are currently weighing the company’s strong fundamentals—such as its 21.1 P/E ratio, which sits near the industry average of 20.2—against the risks of a potential market downturn.

Market Sentiment and Investor Outlook

Market reaction to the debut has been characterized by notable volatility. While the ADRs saw a double-digit gain on their first day, the company’s home-listed shares (KOSE:A000660) experienced a 10.1% decline over the past week. Despite this, the long-term trend remains positive, with the company’s share price having grown roughly sevenfold over the past three years.

For those assessing the company’s valuation, perspectives vary. Some data indicates that the stock trades below certain analyst consensus targets and estimates of fair value. However, analysts caution that the presence of non-cash earnings and the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry are essential risks for investors to monitor.

As the Nasdaq listing integrates into the broader market, observers are expected to watch for shifts in trading volumes, valuation metrics, and the evolving shareholder mix between South Korea and the United States. For now, the company remains focused on fulfilling the immense demand from its high-profile partners, including Nvidia and Apple, as it attempts to sustain its current momentum in the AI era.
