While the collision is unintentional, NASA and SpaceX have confirmed it poses no threat to Earth, though it highlights growing concerns about space debris.
The Unplanned Lunar Collision
The rocket stage, part of a Falcon 9 launch from January 2025 that delivered Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander, was left in an unstable orbit after completing its mission. Solar activity and gravitational forces eventually redirected it toward the moon, according to NASA. The agency’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies confirmed a 100% probability of impact, with the stage expected to strike the moon’s surface at 06:35 GMT, creating a crater approximately 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep.
Although the collision was not planned, it aligns with historical precedents. A Chinese rocket stage crashed into the moon in 2022, and NASA intentionally impacted a rocket stage in 2009 to study lunar material. The upcoming event, however, offers a rare opportunity for scientific research, as the impact’s predictable trajectory allows for detailed observation by telescopes and spacecraft.
Scientific Opportunities and Risks
Scientists are eager to study the impact’s effects on the lunar surface. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri lunar orbiter will capture images before and after the collision, while ground-based telescopes will attempt to observe the dust plume. The impact’s energy is equivalent to three tons of TNT, with ejected material potentially visible to telescopes for tens of minutes. Observers in eastern North America, Canada, and South America may have the best viewing conditions, though visibility will depend on weather and lighting.
