Spokane Wildfires Destroy 700 Structures and Displace 65,000 People

Spokane wildfires, including the Old Trails, Fairview, and Autumn Lane blazes, have destroyed nearly 700 structures and displaced over 65,000 people as of August 4, 2026. Governor Bob Ferguson has requested immediate federal assistance from FEMA to provide search and rescue, emergency power, and temporary sheltering for the region.

The scale of the destruction in Northwest Spokane has left officials and residents describing the landscape as a war zone. Wind-driven flames, peaking at 35-45 mph, raced through the city and surrounding county, turning established neighborhoods into clusters of charred brick and melted metal. Mayor Lisa Brown called the event the worst natural disaster the region has faced.

The Old Trails Fire and Neighborhood Devastation

The Old Trails fire sparked north of Airway Heights and jumped the Spokane River, eventually igniting the hillside above North Aubrey L. White Parkway. In one specific cluster of at least 50 homes, not a single property was spared. Assistant Spokane Fire Chief Lance Dahl noted at a news conference late Saturday that the devastation was nearly unstoppable, stating, There is not a fire department in the United States that can handle a wind-driven event this size.

The physical toll is evident on streets like Skyline Drive and West Tiffany Drive, where many homes are gone. For some, the loss is absolute.

While some residents salvaged a few heirlooms—such as pagoda statues or a single muffin tin—much of the area remains a barren landscape. In the Indian Trail Neighborhood, Sheri Clark stood in what used to be her driveway on Sunday, observing that her tomato plants, which had been ripened red and perfect for picking on Saturday, had instead melted into mush from the heat and dropped from the wilted vine. Clark described the scene as a cluster of black and white rubble and remarked, This is what I imagine a war zone is like. It feels unreal.

The flames tore through Riverside State Park and razed at least 640 structures as of Sunday, mostly within the city. Many lost homes were identifiable only by standing chimneys, while smoldering foundations remained hot enough to melt shoes. Signs of children, such as chalked hopscotch, lingered on sidewalks.

FEMA Resources and State Response

Governor Bob Ferguson announced on Monday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has agreed to send resources before formal approval is finalized. Ferguson noted that Washington is battling 17 major wildfires burning more than 260,000 acres, an area he described as the size of 200,000 football fields.

The requested direct federal assistance includes:

  • Search and rescue operations
  • Debris removal
  • Medical supplies and assistance
  • Temporary sheltering
  • Emergency power, specifically generators for jurisdictions and tribes

The response effort involves more than 900 individuals across various agencies. Public Lands Commissioner Dave Upthegrove confirmed the deployment of rotor and fixed-wing aircraft, engines, dozers, and hand crews, including specialized teams brought in from California and Australia.

Current Containment and Casualty Status

Despite the massive mobilization, the situation remains volatile. The three primary fires—Autumn Lane, Old Trails, and Fairview—cover more than 8,000 acres and are currently at 0% containment. While no casualties or injuries have been officially reported from any of the three blazes so far, local officials are still assessing whether lives were lost.

The Old Trails fire and two other fires in Spokane County forced 60,000 evacuations, threatening more than 14,000 structures within the city’s evacuation boundaries. Later reports indicated the number of displaced people exceeded 65,000.

Sheriff John Nowels stated that his office received approximately 290 911 calls. While most people have been located, 14 individuals remain unaccounted for. Nowels clarified that these are not necessarily missing persons reports, but rather people who may have called for evacuation help and have not yet been reached by phone.

Investigation into Human Origins

The cause of the triple firestorm is still under official investigation, according to Gregory Mark, a spokesperson for the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. However, the Northwest Coordination Center recently reported that the origins of the fires were “human”, a designation that could encompass either arson or unintentional sparks from human activity.

These human-caused sparks were amplified by a particularly dangerous situation identified by the National Weather Service, characterized by warm, dry weather and highly flammable grass. The resulting catastrophe has been described by Rep. Michael Baumgartner as an unprecedented catastrophe.

As the fires continue to burn, Mayor Lisa Brown has urged residents for patience, stating that police and fire personnel are evaluating safety neighborhood by neighborhood and block by block. Brown emphasized that officials are regularly reevaluating the weather, the fire, and the potential for things to reignite, and will issue changes on a daily basis when it is safe to do so.
