The human toll was highlighted by resident Geoff Beadles, who fled his home with his fiancée and two dogs. He told the AFP that driving past the destroyed homes was one of the most heartbreaking things I have seen in my life.

The Old Trails Fire and Environmental Factors

Three active fires in and around Spokane have burned approximately 2,180 hectares, according to CNN. The most significant of these, the Old Trails Fire, crossed the Spokane River on Saturday afternoon before entering the city, which has a population of approximately 230,000 people.

The fires were fueled by extreme drought and intense heat. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, noting that Washington is experiencing its fourth year of drought. Dave Upthegrove, the commissioner of public lands, stated that this year is already one of the busiest for wildfires on record, despite only being at the start of August. Upthegrove attributed the favorable conditions for these devastating fires to climate change.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

Authorities issued a maximum evacuation alert, titled Go Now, for large sectors of northern Spokane where several thousand people reside. Residents reported scenes of chaos on Saturday, with videos showing homes engulfed in flames and a wall of fire advancing toward buildings. Public safety journalist Alexandra Duggan described seeing a massive column of black smoke and flames east of a primary school. The Spokesman-Review reported that houses exploded with loud detonations in some smoke-covered neighborhoods.

Evacuation efforts led to massive traffic jams. Resident Tena Risley told the AFP that there were probably hundreds and hundreds of cars and that flames had blocked multiple roads outside the city.

The Washington State National Guard initiated a rapid mobilization of units to support rescue efforts. In a message posted Sunday morning, the reserve body stated that its air forces had dropped approximately 3,497,000 liters of water over 137 hours to combat the blazes.
