A vast majority of Singaporean youth and adults support the nation’s continued strict drug laws, according to the results of the 2025 National Drug Perception Survey.

Singapore’s Strict Drug Laws Maintain Strong Public Support

Nearly 93 percent of youth respondents and more than 96 percent of adults surveyed believe Singapore should maintain its tough stance against drugs. Support among young people has increased since the last survey conducted in 2023.

Officials noted that while many countries are either abandoning drug enforcement or considering legalization, Singapore has “swum against the tide” and seen increased public support, including from its youth population.

Criminal Gangs Thrive Where Drug Enforcement Lags

When governments are lenient or ineffective in addressing drug issues, criminal gangs exploit the situation, officials warned. South America, for example, has become a major source and transit point for drugs like cocaine.

In Uruguay, gangs have become increasingly brazen, even attacking the home of an anti-narcotics prosecutor. In North America, the legalization of marijuana has reportedly led to significant public health consequences.

Europe is facing growing concerns over cocaine use. Despite increased enforcement efforts, the approach has been “fairly tolerant,” allowing criminal gangs to take root, corrupt officials, and recruit individuals for drug trafficking and violence.

Officials emphasized that drugs impose substantial socio-economic costs on society as a whole.
