Taylor to One Nation: Lower Costs, Regional Focus & Security

Angus Taylor has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party, replacing Sussan Ley after a party room vote of 34 to 17. The leadership change comes as the party seeks to redefine its direction and avoid potential extinction, with Taylor warning the party must “change or die.”

Taylor Calls for Return to Core Values

Taylor conceded the Liberal Party had been distracted and had forgone the “politics of conviction.” He stated the party had gotten some big calls wrong, specifically on personal income tax, and pledged such missteps would not be repeated. If an election were held today, he warned, the party may not exist by the end of it.

The incoming deputy leader, Jane Hume, acknowledged that many Australians had lost faith in the Liberal Party, promising a renewed focus on “courage and conviction.” She described the Liberal Party as “a party of hope, of aspiration, but most importantly, a party for all Australians.”

Farrer Byelection Looms

The leadership change was triggered by a spill motion passed 33 to 17. Barnaby Joyce has indicated One Nation intends to contest the seat of Farrer following Ley’s resignation, with the party seeking a “strong candidate” representing regional New South Wales and the rural sector.

Ley’s exit followed a crushing defeat to Taylor in the leadership contest. The contest between Ley and Taylor was widely expected to be tight, but Taylor secured a decisive victory.

Ley’s Farewell

Ley thanked her supporters for their loyalty and stated she held no hard feelings towards those who voted against her. She expressed gratitude to the Liberal Party and the Parliament of Australia after more than 25 years of service.

Ley added that it was important for the new leader to have “clear air” to lead the party forward.

Former Liberal PMs Weigh In

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott endorsed Taylor’s leadership, stating the next federal election was winnable under his direction. He urged all Liberals to support the new leader and cautioned against becoming a “teal-lite” or “One Nation-lite” party, emphasizing the importance of remaining strongly Liberal.

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was more critical, dismissing claims Taylor could solve the Liberal Party’s issues. He argued the party needed to move back to the center and develop detailed plans regarding the economy, housing affordability, and tax reform.

O’Brien Pledges Loyalty

Ted O’Brien, the outgoing deputy leader, pledged his support to Taylor and Hume, describing them as an “awesome and effective team.” He expressed his willingness to continue as shadow treasurer, deferring to the new leader’s decision.

Dan Tehan also expressed gratitude to Ley for her leadership and described her approach as “incredibly dignified” and “incredibly respectful.”
