The overhauled assistant, branded as Siri AI, relies directly on the architecture of Apple Intelligence to deliver personal context understanding, broad world knowledge, and onscreen awareness according to the company’s official release. But because those processing demands require modern chipsets and unified memory, compatibility is strictly limited to recent hardware generations across iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches.

iPhone Compatibility and the Apple Intelligence Divide

While Apple’s overarching iOS 27 software update supports a wide range of older hardware—running on every iPhone model from the iPhone 11 onward—the advanced AI features draw a hard line. To run Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, users need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, any model in the iPhone 16 family, or the iPhone 17 generation as outlined by hardware tracking reports. Standard iOS 27 installs will function on older handsets, but those devices will miss out on the deeply integrated assistant.

The compatibility puzzle extends beyond smartphones into Apple’s tablet and computer lineups. For tablet users, iPadOS 27 with Siri AI requires an iPad Air or iPad Pro equipped with an M1 chip or later, alongside the A17 Pro iPad mini. Meanwhile, Mac compatibility covers any system powered by Apple silicon, starting with the M1 chip and extending through newer M-series processors.

Wearable integration follows strict pairing rules. Supported watch models include the Apple Watch Series 9 and 10, Series 11, Ultra 2 and 3, and the Apple Watch SE 3.

Advanced AI Tiers and Resource Demands

Apple has further tiered its software capabilities, reserving its most powerful local foundation models and granular voice controls for devices with substantial processing headroom. Fully customizing the pace and expressivity of Siri AI’s voice, along with running the heaviest on-device models, is restricted to select high-end hardware. According to developer documentation and hardware breakdowns, these premium features require the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, iPhone Air, iPads with an M4 chip and at least 12GB of unified memory, Macs with an M3 chip or newer and 12GB of RAM, and the M5 Apple Vision Pro.

Apple May Tie Heavy Siri AI Usage to Larger iCloud Plans

Not all regions will see the update simultaneously. Siri AI will not be available in the European Union on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 at launch, with Apple citing regulatory compliance issues tied directly to the Digital Markets Act.
