Thailand & Cambodia Ceasefire Renewed After Border Clashes

Washington – Thai and Cambodian leaders have agreed to renew a ceasefire after days of clashes threatened to undo an earlier agreement brokered by the U.S., former President Donald Trump announced Friday.

Thailand-Cambodia Ceasefire Renewed

Trump announced the agreement following calls with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He stated that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also played a role in facilitating the renewed truce.

“They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim,” Trump said in a social media posting.

He added, “It is my Honor to work with Anutin and Hun in resolving what could have evolved into a major War between two otherwise wonderful and prosperous Countries!”

Anutin Charnvirakul described the call with Trump as going “well” but did not initially mention a specific agreement to halt fighting.

However, Cambodia reported on Saturday that Thailand continued to conduct airstrikes on its territory. The Cambodian defence ministry stated via X (formerly Twitter) that Thai military aircraft dropped seven bombs on multiple targets using two F-16 fighter jets, and that the bombing had not ceased.

This week’s conflict has resulted in at least 20 deaths and over 260 injuries, according to reports from both countries, each of which blames the other for restarting the hostilities. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the border.

Anutin reportedly asked Trump to urge Cambodia to end hostilities, withdraw troops, and remove landmines. “I explained to President Trump that we are not the aggressor against Cambodia but we are retaliating,” Anutin told reporters. “He wants a ceasefire. I told him to tell our friends – don’t just say a ceasefire but they must tell the world that Cambodia will cease fire, withdraw its troops, remove all landmines it has planted. They must show us first.”

A spokesperson for the Cambodian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Trump’s call with Hun Manet, who nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in August.
