The Shards Premieres August 5 on FX and Hulu
The highly anticipated television adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel The Shards is set to debut on August 5, with FX and Hulu airing the first two episodes. Produced by 20th Television and Ryan Murphy Productions, the series arrives following the 2023 publication of Ellis’ book, which was the author’s first novel in 13 years.

A Dark Coming-of-Age Story in 1981 Los Angeles
Set against the backdrop of 1981 Los Angeles, the series explores the final year of high school for a group of privileged seniors at the elite Buckley prep school. The story follows a 17-year-old version of Ellis, portrayed by Igby Rigney. As an aspiring writer and a keenly observant teenager, Rigney’s character finds his reality beginning to unravel following the arrival of a mysterious, magnetic new student named Robert Mallory, played by Homer Gere. The tension in the narrative is driven by the arrival of Mallory, which coincides with a wave of terror across the city. A serial killer known as “The Trawler” begins targeting teenagers, creating a sense of dread that contrasts with the glamorous, excess-filled lives of the main characters. According to the official logline, the series navigates themes of identity, jealousy, obsession, and the dangers hidden beneath the surface of American adolescence.
The Cast and Creative Team
The series features an ensemble cast portraying both the elite social circle of students and the cynical adults surrounding them. Joining Rigney and Gere are Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer, and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright. The adult roles are filled by Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer, Evan Rachel Wood as Liz Schaffer, and Jordan Roth as Steven Reinhardt. The casting process involved rigorous selection, particularly for the role of Robert Mallory. According to producer Brad Simpson, Homer Gere brought an “intensity and intelligence” to the role that the production team found essential. Ryan Murphy noted that as soon as Gere read for the part, he was certain he was the right choice. Similarly, the casting of Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds was a shared vision between Murphy and Ellis, with Murphy noting that Gerber had already been tracking the book and the specific role before she was approached. The production is led by an extensive executive producing team, including Ryan Murphy, Bret Easton Ellis, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.
