First introduced in 1984 as a heavy-duty off-roader for commercial and extreme utility tasks, the platform remains in active production with modern chassis refinements, updated powertrains, and improved safety features while retaining its renowned durability and off-road capability. While the refreshed model returned to Japan for the 2024 model year, this three-door SWB version remains exclusive to export markets. As noted in media reports, the classic Toyota Land Cruiser 70 is not only not going to be discontinued, but is also regularly modernized and its model line is being expanded, with videos of the revived convertible appearing on the official Land Cruiser YouTube channel. Commercial Hardtop: A narrow-body black off-roader built for rugged service, featuring a snorkel, steel wheels, manual windows, and a practical vinyl interior alongside basic mechanical appointments. Premium Hardtop: A sand-colored variant featuring flared fenders, alloy wheels, power windows, an integrated infotainment system, and a more comfortable cabin with upscale interior trim, while Carscoops noted that the convertible with a soft top and folding windshield that can be unlatched and secured on the hood attracted the most attention.

The soft-top convertible stands out as the most distinctive model in the showcase, featuring a windscreen that unlatches and folds flat against the hood. According to Toyota Land Cruiser Chief Engineer Masaya Uchiyama, who is also referred to in reports as Masao Uchiyama, this specific layout is in demand among farmers and ranch workers, allowing them to throw lassos directly from a moving vehicle on a ranch. The convertible also received a roll-over protection structure, described as a roll bar intended to save occupants in a rollover, alongside rear side-facing seats that increase total capacity to six or seven people.

The compact proportions of the SWB platform contribute directly to its agility, featuring a short wheelbase of only 2310 millimeters. For comparison, this metric is 120 millimeters smaller than the smallest European Toyota Aygo X model and only 60 millimeters longer than the wheelbase of a Suzuki Jimny, while the total length of the off-roader reaches 4235 millimeters. Beneath the bodywork lies a sturdy ladder-frame chassis with live rigid axles front and rear, matched with front coil springs and rear leaf springs.

Both configurations feature standard four-wheel drive.

Market distribution heavily favors the Middle East. Masaya Uchiyama, also cited as Masao Uchiyama, noted that approximately 90 percent of all produced short-wheelbase 70 Series off-roaders are supplied to Gulf countries and the Middle East, with the remaining 10 percent sold in select regions of South America and Asia.
